Why Prep Work Is Everything in Painting

The single biggest variable in how a paint job looks — and how long it lasts — is what happens before the first finish coat goes on. Most paint failures aren’t paint failures. They’re prep failures: skipped sanding, missed caulking, dirty surfaces, no primer on bare wood, primers used on the wrong substrate. We don’t take shortcuts on prep, because the shortcuts always show up later.

For interior work that means filling nail holes, sanding patched drywall smooth, caulking trim gaps, scraping loose paint, and priming any patched or stained areas before the topcoat. For exteriors it means pressure washing, scraping, sanding, spot-priming bare wood, replacing any rotted boards or trim, and caulking every seam before paint touches the surface.

A painter who skips prep can finish your house in three days. A painter who does prep properly takes a week. The difference shows up four years later when one house still looks like the day it was painted and the other one is peeling around every window.

Exterior Painting Services

Massachusetts weather is brutal on exterior paint. We work with the climate, not against it:

  • Wood siding (clapboard, shingle, board-and-batten)
  • Fiber cement (HardiePlank) repainting
  • Trim, soffits, fascia, and decorative millwork
  • Front doors and entry features
  • Decks, fences, pergolas, and outdoor furniture
  • Garage doors and shutters
  • Foundations and concrete walls

Cabinet Painting & Refinishing

If your kitchen layout works but the cabinets look dated, painting is the highest-impact, lowest-cost upgrade available. Done properly — and “properly” is key — cabinet painting holds up for 10+ years and transforms the entire room.

Our cabinet painting process:

  1. Remove all doors and drawer fronts. Label every hinge and hardware location.
  2. Degrease with TSP or commercial cleaner — kitchen cabinets are full of cooking oils that prevent bonding.
  3. Light sand all surfaces to scuff the existing finish.
  4. Spot-prime any stained or bare-wood areas with a bonding primer.
  5. Full prime coat in a bonding primer (Insl-X Cabinet Coat, Stix, or Benjamin Moore Advance Primer).
  6. 2-3 finish coats of cabinet-grade enamel — sprayed in our shop or sprayed on-site with proper dust containment.
  7. Re-hang doors, install new hardware (or reinstall existing), final caulk and touch-up.

Color Consultation Included

Picking colors is harder than picking paint. We include a 30-minute color consultation with every interior or exterior project — we’ll bring sample chips, look at how light hits each room, and talk through palette decisions. If you want a fully designed scheme we can also coordinate with a paid color consultant.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does interior painting take?

A typical 3-bedroom home interior repaint takes 4-7 working days depending on ceiling heights, trim detail, and how much furniture moving is involved. We always include the prep work (sanding, caulking, patching) in the timeline — skipping that is what causes paint to fail in 2-3 years.

What’s the best time of year to paint the exterior in MA?

Late May through mid-October is the window. Surface temps need to be above 50°F and dropping below 50°F overnight risks bond failure. We avoid painting in rain or high humidity and shut down work if conditions go sideways.

Do you do cabinet painting?

Yes — cabinet painting is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh a kitchen without a full renovation. We do proper prep: remove doors, label hardware, degrease, sand, prime with bonding primer, then 2-3 finish coats of cabinet-grade enamel. Done right, painted cabinets hold up for 10+ years.

What paint brands do you use?

We use Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams as our primary brands. For interiors we typically spec Aura, Regal Select, or Duration Home. Exteriors are usually Aura Exterior or Duration. We’re brand-agnostic — if you have a preference, we use what you choose.

Do I need to move furniture before you arrive?

We handle most of the furniture moving and cover everything that stays. We ask homeowners to remove fragile or valuable personal items (electronics, art, breakables) before we start.

Do you offer color consultation?

Yes — a 30-minute color consultation is included with any interior or exterior paint project. We can also coordinate with paid color consultants if you want a fully designed palette.
